Noble Friends,
Recently both the History Blog and Archaeology News reported on the
discovery of a medieval amethyst jewel found during excavations at a ruined
Polish castle.
The jewel is an unfaceted amethyst in a partial silver setting. Remnants of
a pin on the back suggest it was part of a brooch. It is a very high-status
item. The owner cannot be identified, but is presumed to be an aristocrat.
The jewel was found in the moat at the site of the 13th century Kolno
Castle in southwest Poland. The castle was burned and the site abandoned in
1443 during a period of civil unrest connected with the Hussite wars.
The bling is seen at https://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/73713 .
