Noble Friends, Especially Vikings and Fellow Scots,

Yesterday the BBC featured a story on the discovery of a carved stone head
found in an archaeological excavation in the Orkney Islands.

The piece was discovered by archaeology student Katie Joss on the island of
Rousay during the ongoing Skaill Farm dig. The farm is believed to be the
site of a settlement belonging to the powerful 12th century Viking lord
Sigurd of Westness.

The head is carved in bas relief from sandstone, and is intact except for a
broken nose. Dig director Dr. Sarah Jane Gibbon noted the similarity to
carvings at St. Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall. The cathedral was built by
Earl Rognvald, a close associate of Sigurd. [St. Magnus is one of just two
intact medieval cathedrals in Scotland, the other being St. Mungo's
Cathedral in Glasgow].

The story is found at https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c98j8rg1ejpo .

Yours Aye,
