Noble Friends,

Yesterday *Archaeology News* reported on the discovery of a massive trove
of medieval shoes and other leather goods in Oslo, Norway.

The items were found in the Bjørvika neighborhood, now inland but
previously a harbor. The finds are mainly shoes in various types and sizes,
with a few leather bags and knife sheaths. Over 2,900 pieces have been
recovered. So far more than 200 shoes have been identified and cataloged,
but experts think the total could be over 1,000.

Most shoes are patched and worn through, suggesting the goods were dumped
in a trash heap that was washed into the harbor and later covered with fill.

The story and several photos can be found at

Another version of the story, with additional photos, is found on the *History
