Today the BBC is offering a brief video presentation about alleged medieval
Pope Joan.

Yes, you heard me right, a female Pope! Supposedly she disguised herself as
a man and rose through the Church ranks to the top, until she unexpectedly
gave birth during a religious procession.

Whether this actually happened is debatable, but the story itself is a real
piece of medieval history (or disinformation), one that just wouldn't go
away. Just like conspiracy theories today on electronic media, the story
kept being repeated and wouldn't die.
