Today marks the birth of St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest continuously
occupied city in North America to be founded by European colonists.
St. Augustine was founded on 28 August 1565, the feast day of St. Augustine
of Hippo, by the Spanish Explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. The city's
early history was marked by conflict with nearby French outposts as both
countries vied for control of Florida. The Spanish eventually won, quite
brutally, by wiping out all the male French settlers they could catch.
Sir Francis Drake left his own sooty fingerprints on St. Augustine in 1586.
Drake burned the town to the ground and chased the surviving residents into
the swamps. The Spanish returned as soon as Drake was safely on his way
(with all their valuables), and St. Augustine rose again.
