Noble Friends,

Today the History Blog reports on the "so-called" Ardshanbally Brooch, an
8th century Irish artefact.

The brooch is named after the town in Limerick County where it was
discovered in 2024 during highway construction. It is a pseudo-penannular
design, executed in bronze. The piece features elaborate designs, and was
decorated with two blue and two red stones.

The reason the brooch is currently in the news relates to an exhibition of
Irish manuscripts on loan from the monastery of St. Gall in Switzerland.
The manuscripts will be displayed along with the Ardshanbally Brooch and
other treasures at the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin. The exhibit,
WORDS ON THE WAVE, IRELAND AND ST. GALLEN IN EARLY MEDIEVAL EUROPE, will
run from May 30 to October 24.

The History Blog showing the brooch is at
