Noble Friends,

Over a period of several days during May 1373, Julian of Norwich
experienced a series of 16 visions of Christ's passion during a
life-threatening illness.

Her visions prompted Julian to become an anchoress at St. Julian's Church
in Norwich. Here Julian lived in a cell until her death sometime after
1416. If she thought she was going to get peace, she was wrong. Her visions
brought her fame, and all sorts of people came to the church to consult
with her on various spiritual matters. Among her visitors was the very
troublesome and rather unstable Marjery Kempe.

Julian wrote two texts describing her visions. The first was penned shortly
after the visions, and is today known as the short text. It is known by a
single copy manuscript held by the British Library. The second, or long
text, was written shortly before Julian's death. It is known from three
copies, two in the British Library, and one in the National Library of
France. The long text was first published in 1670 under the title *XVI
Revelations of Divine Love, shewed to a devout servant of Our Lord, called
Mother Juliana, an Anchorete of Norwich: Who lived in the Dayes of King
Edward the Third* by a priest named Sernus de Cressy.
