Noble Friends,
After a dry spell (news-wise) it sometimes pours. So today you get a
double-header.
BBC Scotland is reporting on the sale of an elaborately-painted maiolica
work dish thought to be the work of Nicola da Urbino. The Urbino plate
shows a very detailed picture of Delilah cutting Samson's hair. It was
expected to sell for between £80,000 and £120,000, but knocked down for
£1,040,000. At that price, this one plate you wouldn't want to put in your
dishwasher: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-south-scotland-58814944 .
Maiolica work was a type of tin-glazed decorative pottery from the
Renaissance period. The finest examples were made in Italy, and were also
known as *istoriato* wares ("painted with stories"). They often featured
biblical or classical scenes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maiolica .
Yours Aye,
Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
