Noble Friends,

Today the History Blog is offering a piece on the discovery of a 17th
century shipwreck in the Gulf of Finland. The ship was preserved by a layer
of cold freshwater which is inhospitable to the marine worms that love to
munch on old shipwrecks. The story and a link to a very interesting video
clip is found here: http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/59389 .

Yes, the ship in question is 17th century, but it is a Dutch "fluyt", a
design developed in the 16th century. Generally unarmed for maximum cargo,
the 80-foot vessels were sturdy, cheap to build and required a small crew.
They cut the cost of shipping, which allowed the Dutch to dominate European
civilian maritime shipping by the 17th century:

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
