Noble Friends,

Except for the Lewis Chessman (no ID on the buyer yet), this has been a
slow week for news from the middle ages. Lacking any thing else upon which
to comment, I decided to call your attention to a very interesting saint
who is now largely forgotten.

Saint Hubertus, or Saint Hubert, was an 8th century huntsman from what is
now Belgium. His call to the Church came after the death of his wife, when
Hubert gave himself completely over to hunting. Accoring to his various
Lives, on Good Friday around instead of attending church he went hunting.
Hubert encountered a stag with a cross burning between its antlers. Then a
voice spoke and said to Hubert that he would go to Hell unless he repented
and joined the Church. The voice ordered Hubert to seek out Lambert, Bishop
of Maastricht, for his instruction. Hubert did just that, and was
eventually ordained as a priest. Later following the 705 assassination of
Lambert, Hubert was elevated to his seat as Bishop of Maastricht.

Not surprisingly, Saint Hubert is venerated as the patron of huntsmen,
trappers and forest workers in general. His portfolio also includes archers
(shared with Saint Sebastian), metal workers, smelters, and dogs. He is
also patron saint for the cities of Liège and Saint Lamberge, both in
modern Belgium.

More about Saint Hubert can be found at

Yours Aye,
