Today's featured image is of Quedlinburg Abbey, in the present German state
of Saxony-Anhalt. The abbey was founded in 936 by King Otto I as a memorial
to his father Henry the Fowler at the request of his mother Queen Mathilda
(later canonized as St. Mathilda). Quedlinburg's abbesses were answerable
directly to the Pope, and not to the local Bishop of Halberstadt, and also
enjoyed broad secular powers. This led to many conflicts the various sexist
bishops who claimed that biblically women were subject to the rule of men,
but the ladies generally prevailed. The abbey church is dedicated St.
Servatius, and today is used by a Lutheran congregation. The remains of
Henry the Fowler, St. Mathilda, and St. Servatius are buried in the crypt.
