Noble Friends,

Today the BBC reports that a 63-pound ball has been discovered by
archaeologists during excavations at Hay Castle in Wales. The ball is
believed to have been launched by a trebuchet during one of the many sieges
of Hay Castle, and may date to the Barons' War of 1263-1266.

The story and a photo of the ball, along with a picture of a pair of really
wicked looking trebuchets, can be found at
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-49269127 .

More about Hay Castle can be found at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hay_Castle , or additional photos (very slow
loading) at http://www.castlewales.com/hay.html . The castle is currently
under a major reconstruction/stabalization, and is closed until 2020.

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
