Noble Friends, Especially Renaissance Italians,

On this day in 1173 the foundation was laid for the Leaning Tower of Pisa,
more properly Campanile di Cattedrale Metropolitana Primaziale di Santa
Maria Assunta, Duomo di Pisa. The Leaning Tower is actually a free-standing
bell tower adjacent to the cathedral building. Due to unstable soil and
shallow foundations, the tower began to lean almost immediately. As
construction dragged on over the next 200 years, the builders attempted to
compensate for the lean. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the lean was
corrected from 5.5 degress to slightly less than 4 degrees:

The Wikipedia article mentions the 1989 collapse of the Civic Tower of
Pavia. While there isn't much information about the tragedy, photos of the
tower are found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civic_Tower_(Pavia) .

Yours Aye,
