On this date in 1280 King Magnus IV of Norway died. Magnus is sometimes
known by the by-name "The Law Mender" for his modernization of Norway's
Viking-era law system. He apparently ruled wisely, avoided costly wars by
careful diplomacy, and made many modernizing reforms. By some he was
considered weak, especially for ceding the Hebrides and Man to Scotland,
but ruled his country well for 17 years.
