Noble Friends, Especially Fellow Scots:
On this date in 1508, the Archbishop of Glasgow Robert Blackadder (modern
spelling) died while on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Although the Wikipedia
article does not say so, his death happened in Italy, or at sea shortly
after a stop there. He died of the "plague", or some other unnamed disease,
which also killed most of his party.
Robert Blackadder (besides having a really cool name!) was the first
Archbishop of Glasgow, having been elevated from Bishop in 1492. He is
credited with construction of a major addition to Glasgow Cathedral known
as the "Blackadder Aisle".
More about Archbishop Blackadder is found at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Blackadder .
For a really fine site about Glasgow Cathedral with some great photos
(including the Blackadder Aisle) see
http://bitaboutbritain.com/mungos-glasgow-cathedral/ . A Wikipedia site
does not offer a photo of the Blackadder Aisle, but has other history:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_Cathedral .
Forgive me if this sounds self-promoting (well, it is, sort of), but
Archbishop Blackadder plays a part in my persona's backstory. I offer this
is an example of how we can make our SCA characters more meaningful and fun
by inserting ourselves into real history without doing too much damage to
the truth: http://isenfir.atlantia.sca.org/people/mungo.php . Sir Oliver
Sinclair and Sir Donald le Nae Peer were also real people.
Yours Aye,
Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
