Noble Friends,

On this date in 1399, the famous cathedral builder Peter Parler died in
Prague. Peter was a member of the Parler dynasty of
masons/builders/architects who are associated with many structures in
Central Europe, particularly large churches, and whose style and techniques
influenced many other builders: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Parler

Peter Parler is best known for his work on St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Vitus_Cathedral .

His other remarkable work is the Charles Bridge across the Vltava ("The
Moldau" of Smetana's tone poem) in Prague:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bridge . Holy Roman Emperor Charles
laid the bridge's first stone in 1357, though the bridge was not named
after him until the 19th century. The famous statues which line the bridge
are 17th and 18th century additions. Parler also designed the associated
watch tower/gatehouse.

Another brief Wikipedia page lists other members of the Parler dynasty, and
some have pages of their own: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parler_family .

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
