Noble Friends,

Today the BBC has an interesting piece on the village of Trellech or
Tryleg, depending on whether you speak English or Welsh. No problem there.
Many places in Wales have two names, to account for both languages.
Trellech/Tryleg is a bit different though. Depending on which list or which
expert you consult, the village has as many 30 spellings and
pronunciations. Is it Trelleck or Trelech? Trylegh or Trillek? Tryllek or
Trilleg? All this points to the hazards of non-standardized spelling in
various languages throughout history (and still found in the Scots
language). This problem can cause SCA heralds to tear out their hair.

Even if you don't care about the spelling controversy, BBC's story offers a
very nice photo of the town's 14th C St. Nicholas Church:
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-44683054 .

Trellech/Tryleg was a major trading center until it was nearly wiped out by
the plague. Archaeological digs are uncovering the town's past:

the "More" pull-down.

Wikipedia offers a page on Trellech/Tryleg which includes photos of the
Harold Stones mentioned in the first article cited above. It also has a
photo of The Virtuous Well, a holy well and healing site popular up into
the 17th C. The page is found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trellech .

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
