Noble Friends,
I just missed this, but 4 October 1564 was the birth date of the English Jesuit priest Father John Gerard. Father Gerard trained at the English College in Douai and Reams, Exeter College at Oxford, and was ordained following studies at the Jesuit Clermont College in Paris. He made two missions back into England to minister and say the Mass to recusant (underground) Catholics. He was arrested several times, and ended up being held in Salt Tower, a mural tower on the walls of the Tower of London. From here he escaped in 1597, sliding down a rope extended across the castle moat, despite his hands being mangled from tortures. Father Gerard never returned to England, and died in Rome of natural causes at the age of 73.
