Noble Friends,

Today nothing interesting happened in history for me to write about, but while thrashing around Wikipedia I found the interesting story of Carlos, Prince of Asturias (1545-1568).

This unfortunate young man was the eldest son of the Spanish King Phillip II and Maria Manuela of Portugal, and heir to the Spanish throne. A victim of Hapsburg inbreeding, his parents were closely related and there was much more of this among Carlos’ ancestors. He was born sickly and somewhat deformed. Later in his short life Carlos became mentally unstable. The prince was implicated in the revolt against Spanish rule in the Netherlands, and was arrested and imprisoned by his father. Carlos died of natural causes a year later. There were nasty rumors that Carlos was poisoned on the orders of his father, and the story gave rise to operas and plays.

You can read about Carlos, and the literature that grew from his tragic story at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos,_Prince_of_Asturias .

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge
