Noble Friends,

On this day in 1430, the Maid of Orleans, aka Joan of Arc, was captured 
at the Siege of Compiègne. Joan had just led a sortie from the town 
against the attacking Burgundians. She and her vanguard were cut off 
during the retreat when the gates slammed shut, trapping them outside. 
Whether this was in a panic by the town defenders or was treason 
(possibly), Joan had swung her sword for the last time. The Burgundians 
turned Joan over to the English, who burned her at the stake:
