Noble Friends,
On this day in 1217, forces under Sir William Marshal defeated the
French and their English allies at Lincoln during the First Barons' War.
Marshal was regent for the young Henry III. The French were there
because many of the barons who had opposed the Bad King John had
accepted Prince Louis of France as their king. Louis had set up a court
in London in 1216, collected taxes, made laws, and in general tried to
run the country. The defeat of his army at Lincoln and the death of the
French commander Thomas, Compte du Perche broke Louis' power. After his
reinforcements under the pirate Eustace the Monk were defeated at sea,
Louis packed up and returned to France with a 10,000 mark bribe not to
come back (eventually he ruled France as Louis VIII).
