On this day in 1565 the Ottoman Turks began the Siege of Malta, bringing 
a huge armada and roughly 30,000 troops against the island. For over 3 
months the Knights of Malta, local forces and civilians numbering 
totaling about 9,000 held three forts and several fortified towns 
against overwhelming odds until the Turks withdrew:
