Noble Friends,

On this date in 1527, Spanish and German troops of the Holy Roman Empire
entered and sacked Rome during the War of the League of Cognac. The
Swiss Papal Guard fought a heroic delaying action against overwhelming
numbers, losing 147 men, including their commander Kaspar Röist . This
allowed the remaining 40 Swiss Guards to drag the Pope from the Vatican
through the Passetto di Borgo to safety in Castel Sant'Angelo:

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge
