Noble Friends,

On this date in 1540, Lady Katherine Grey was born to Henry Grey, 1st
Duke of Suffolk, and his wife Lady Frances Grey (nee Brandon). They
Greys had a claim on the throne of England second only to the reigning
Tudors, being descended from Mary Tudor, youngest daughter of Henry VII
and Elizabeth of York. This was not a comfortable status, as Catherine's
older sister Lady Jane Grey discovered. Like her sisters, Katherine was
a pawn in the byzantine intrigues of the Elizabethan court, and suffered
greatly because of her blood.

Lady Katherine Grey had been married to William Herbert, 1st Earl of
Pembroke. When Lady Jane Grey was executed, Pembroke maneuvered to have
Archbishop Cranmer annual his own marriage, so Pembroke could keep his head.

Her second marriage was a secret union with Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of
Hertford. When Queen Elizabeth found out about the marriage, she had
Katherine imprisoned in the Tower of London. Katherine was to spend the
rest of her short life in custody, though secret trysts with her husband
in the Tower produced two offspring. One of Katherine's children, Edward
Seymour, Lord Beauchamp, is an ancestor of the current House of Windsor.
