Noble Friends,

On this date in 1217, Eustace the Monk, an English pirate, was captured 
during the Battle of Sandwich and beheaded by Philip d'Aubigny. Eustace 
had commanded a large fleet of pirate/privateer ships, and depending on 
who was paying, preyed on both the English and the French. Not a very 
nice fellow, but a significant player in the English-French wars during 
the reign of Bad King John.
