Noble Friends, Especially Fellow Scots,
On this date in 1560, the Scottish Parliament overthrew the Catholic
Church and founded the Church of Scotland (aka "The Kirk"). Scotland
became officially Protestant, and under the influence of John Knox, was
strongly Calvinist. The Kirk was organized with the presbyterian system
of church governance, and is one of the main founts of the modern
Presbyterian Church. Scottish Protestants moved quickly to "cleanse"
church buildings of Catholic decoration and abandoned other forms of
Catholic worship, though at this time there was relatively little
persecution.
The Protestant reformation was extremely important to social and
political changes in Scotland during the late 16th century. The break
with the Catholic Church and the exile of Mary Queen of Scots led to the
end of French influence. Scotland turned toward more peaceful relations
with England (with the exception of the Border Reivers). You can read
more about the Scottish reformation at

Yours Aye,
Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge
