Noble Friends, Especially Heralds,

On this day in 1484 the College of Arms was founded by Richard III of
England: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_of_Arms . The College is
the official heraldic office for Great Britain and the remaining
vestiges of its empire (excluding Scotland).

And why is Scotland excluded? Because they have their own Lord Lyon King
of Arms: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Lyon_King_of_Arms . The
office dates to at least 1399. The Scots take heraldry even more
seriously than the English, and have rather restrictive laws about
misuse of heraldic devices:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Court_of_the_Lord_Lyon .

Most famously, in 2008 Donald Trump was investigated by the Lord Lyon
for improper use of a device at one of his golf courses:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/north_east/7246619.stm . It
took him four years to get this straightened out:

.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, That Crazy Scot
