The comment from Domenico " I don't think that an Autocrat Fire Patrol(tm)
would make a lot of sense." would actually depend on the size of the event.
The larger the event the more help an Autocrat needs. I would also hope
that if people found said fire problem they would do 2 things - One - take
immediate action to put out the fire / coals and talk to the person who was
caught in the act of abandoning a hot fire/coal bed, assuming you caught
them
Two - advise the Autocrat of the situation so they could either take action
or just says "Thanks - I'm glad you were there".
As far as I know virtuallly every autocrat will walk the site of their event
at the end of the event and possibly even during the event. Having other
folks keeping an eye on things, espeially during very dry conditions, does
not mean we need an 'Official Fire Patrol' but it does not hurt to have a
few individuals that will keep an eye out for potential problems. I
wholeheartedly agree that it is OUR responsibility to maintain a safe
camp but not everyone seems to have the same attitude about what their
responsibilities are. Those are the folks who could cause us problems and
that includes legal issues. Sorry to broach the nasty thought, but if
someone left hot coals and a fire damaged people, property or part of the
site that I had supplied I'd be expecting the responsible person or group to
make proper restitution. Too many people are 'law suit happy' these days
and thus we need to be more careful than ever. And why should the Autocrat
be advised regarding this? Because they, and the Seneschal of the
sponsoring group, are the legally responsible persons who would most likely
be named in a legal action. So do your autocrat a favor - keep them in the
loop if you find problems at an event. We deal with enough restrictions
already - let's not let some idiot do something that will add more to the
current collection.
And Domenic - I'm really glad your truck was not damaged. I'm glad you
notified Bran. I'm sure he appreciated the news as well - just in case
somethign did happen - I know I would have if I had been the autocrat of the
event. Still, it never hurts to have a few spare sets of eyes watching for
such things.
