I was a warranted Atlantian marshal for a number of years after I moved here from the East where I had been a marshal before so I have marshalled heavy for over 20 years. At Pennsic, for a number of years, I was one of the marshals that automatically got a walkie-talkie due to my level of experience. For some years I dutifully took the "refresher" courses to keep my warrant up to date but over the past couple of years, I have had conflicts with the dates that courses were offered or the travel from far northern Atlantia to far southern Atlantia just to take one course at an event or a University was not happening. So I lapsed and have been lapsed...
Recently when I sent an email to the linked Marshal email address from the Marshal's website to determine which course I really needed to take at this point, I received no response. As others have expressed, I feel that the courses are not the best way to keep Marshals -- they actually dis-incentivize anyone from staying on the books. I understand that updates need to be communicated but I have yet to find that the in-person courses communicated anything more useful than could have been done by email.

As a member of the Order of the Pelican in Atlantia, I must say that I
o not like these numbers at all. I did a quick analysis of the ratio
f armored fighters to marshalls and our beloved kindgom is ranked
olidly at the bottom of the list where it comes to this service.
In Atlantia, for every 10 armored fighters there is one person who
erves to marshal them. Across the SCA, there is a marshal for an
verage of only three (or so) armored fighters.
This is not a call for more non-combatants to stand out in a field and
atch the rest of us play. This is a call for more of my brothers and
isters in arms to study and train as a marshal in order to better
how courtesy and respect for all who work to ensure our safety.

Out of the 19 kingdoms, Atlantia has the 3rd highest numbers for both Armored
Rapier, behind the East and the Middle. We are also the 4th highest in numbers
or Siege & 5th highest for Equestrian.
