There's an interesting phenomenon - folks that check into their first event
may be 'embarrassed' (shy?) to say "this is my first event, what do I do
from here", and the folks at Gate may well not want to insult some "tin
hat"^ by asking all and sundry they don't recognize "Is this your first
event" if they happen to notice a moment of hesitation at the desk.

I know that a lot of the folks in my area have made an attempt to have
newcomers go immediately to a Gold Key location from Gate. I think one
attempt may well be a small sign that says "Are you new? please follow these
keys (gold key emblem) to the Newcomer's Welcome Area (ie Gold Key, but in
language understandable to newbies) to meet some folks who will lend you a
hand! Be Welcome" or something. The keys obviously should point to where
Gold Key is set up, which should never be far from Gate, in my opinion. Had
I known where such a beast was 6 years ago, I might not have been 'lost' for
as long as I was.

^ - 'tin hat' used here as a general descriptor for anyone who has attained
any rank in which a lovely coronet is 'de rigueur', not in the offensive
manner. I fully admire anyone who has worked hard enough long enough for
such recognition.
