I'm going to chime in and answer Siegfried's question, too, since I did very same thing => wearing really nice garb to the first event.
I was going to be a costume designer for a living. I took classes in college to do costume design for the stage. So, I already had a really good idea about historic garb construction, reference sources, fitting, etc. at least as done for the stage. That's why I was able to put together garb for an event without ever having been associated with the SCA first.
