Olivia ... since you so recently went through this experience.  Could
you help the rest of us understand something?

What led you upon the path of doing all the research, making garb, etc.
 And then showing up for an event as your first introduction to the SCA?

For many of us 'old-timers', when we got into the SCA, it was a much
different experience, where we first found out about the SCA, and then
our first reaction was immediately to contact the Seneschal or
Chatelaine of the local group, talk to them ... which in turn led to us
attending meetings, A&S nights, fighter practices, etc.   And getting to
know the local group, get help making garb, and be 'part of the SCA',
long before attending an event.
