just an idea, 
but suppose folks volunteered to 'foster' a newcomer at an event...If somebody 
shows up who is new, they are directed or escorted to that person's camp and 
introduced, so that the newbie has someone/somewhere to call home base for the 
day, and somebody to answer questions. No 'branding' required. If several people 
volunteer, then that would take care of all the new folks that show up. I think 
it would also give more opportunities for the new folks, and if the newbies 
don't like their 'foster camp', they can go to Troll & trade up.
