[MR] apologies to Heralds

Evan da Collaureo:

Thank you for your thoughtful clarification in a strong voice of experience. In the specific incident I bemoaned, the King himself awarded the badges, not some member of the archery community. In archery the two highest levels, the Bowman Elite and the Grand Bowman Elite, earn badges that the Royals reserve the right to give. There are very few archers who ever reach the latter category. For lesser badges, the King or Queen would not be involved at all.

I'm sorry the badges have nothing to do with precedence - - actually, I'm not even sure what precedence is. It is just a lovely thing to see Atlantia's finest archers receive the acclaim and attention they deserve for their many years of hard work and extraordinary shooting feats.

I think perhaps every discipline withn the sca feels this way. We trumpet what we know. If I may take a small moment to beg Heralds to make note of who makes those beautiful scrolls that are handed out at courts - - it seems to this casual observer that the recipient of the scroll gets lots of attention and applause but the artistry and hours of labor that went into the scroll are many times overlooked, and I am left asking, "but what nameless monk toiled over that incredible scroll?"

With that, I will bow out yet again and await the fusilage.

More specifically: the archery ranks are not included in the Kingdom's Order of
Precedence. There are other disciplines that may have internal ranking systems
as well, and they too are not included in the OP. (The heralds are one of those
disciplines.) When changes to these rankings are announced in court, they should
be included on a court report.

What often happens, however, is that the list of the new ranks is announced by a
member of that discipline, who was called into court for that specific purpose.
That is well and good, except that on occasion, neither the royalty nor the
court herald is supplied with a copy of that list. Then, when it comes time to
write up the court report, the court herald doesn't have the list, and must
scramble. On one occasion in the past I remember putting in my court report
"Neither I nor Their Majesties have the list of new rankings; would someone who
DOES have the list please contact me?"

This, then, is my plea to folks. If you're called into court to announce that
good things are happening to other people, please make sure that the presiding
royalty (and/or baronage) and the court herald get a written copy of what you're
there to announce. THat will simplify the preparation of good court reports
quite a bit.

Thanking you for your time, I have the pleasure to remain yours in service,
Evan da Collaureo
who has been coing this court thing longer than he cares to contemplate right
now
