Noble friends,

It isn't often that we receive a book on a medieval archaeological site,
but NORTON PRIORY: MONASTERY TO MUSEUM, EXCAVATIONS 1970-87 by Fraser
Brown and Christine Howeard-Davis (ISBN 9780904220520; our call # FINE
ARTS DA690 .N878 B76 2008) is a a refreshing change. This is a lavishly
illustrated work of some 474 pages, which details the archaeological
work done at this Augustinian abbey in Cheshire. As you might expect
from an archaeological report, the work covers the structures (including
computer reconstructions), graves of both canons and laity, structural
details like tiles and carvings, and finds of everyday objects including
clothing, pottery, tools and other objects. The objects are presented in
detailed drawings and photographs. This is a great sourcebook for
understanding daily life in a medieval cloister, and the lives of the
lay people who were associated with the community.

Kind regards,

Lord Mungo Napier, Shire of Isenfir's Unofficial Librarian
(mka Garth Groff, UVA Library cataloging dept.)
