 It DOES suggest a marlinspike, though the little thickening near the point is a bit of a mystery.  Have you any idea of its size?

A woman in my 18th C Scottish reenactment group came across a picture of an 

oddly-shaped Scottish spindle and could not identify its purpose.  Any ideas?
