I thought about that too. It might be from being jammed against something hard,
like a deck or someone's head then gotten wet a few too times so that the fibres
separated.

It DOES suggest a marlinspike, though the little thickening near the point is a
bit of a mystery. Have you any idea of its size?

It looks like a marlin spike used for splicing ropes. Considering that Glasgow
has been building ships for centuries, that makes since.
