It looks like a marlin spike used for splicing ropes. Considering that Glasgow 
has been building ships for centuries, that makes since.

A woman in my 18th C Scottish reenactment group came across a picture of an 
oddly-shaped Scottish spindle and could not identify its purpose.  Any ideas?
