I just got back from a briefing at the US Embassy here in Ethiopia.
Per capita income for Ethiopians is about $700 a year, or less than $2 a
day. Price inflation is 29% for the year. There has been a drought and
crops in the southern part of the country failed, which means that about
five million people will not have enough to eat. Gas is about $4 a gallon
here and will go up soon. 80% of the capital is without electricity most of
the week.
Kids play with balls made out of old rags. Hobbies like ours are
inconceivable to the average Ethiopian.
So, count your blessings and hang on tight to your friends. It could be a
lot worse. We'll adjust and get by! :)
