Subject: Re: [MR] Event Bids and Driving Distances
I am a lurker so please forgive my chiming in here: Our life has been crazy busy, so not currently active in the SCA, So you can delete if you think that that should discount me from saying anything. (But I AM madly sewing for pennsic right now....we are hoping to get more active now that the house we are building is livable.)
Something that I wrestle with about this hobby of ours is the impact it has environmentally. (God, that makes me sound like a raving crazy, which anyone who knows me *I hope* knows I am not.) But with the issues surrounding the acquisition of oil and what it has cost this country, driving huge gas guzzling trucks every weekend long distances just so we can bring our material culture with us to events does pain my conscience a bit. Doesn't mean I wont DO it, as I am by nature a selfish creature and I don't even have any children to leave a legacy to. But people who are not wanting to drive long distances every weekend are perhaps not just thinking of their own pocketbook. If the decision was ever made to divide Atlantia into two groups with their own "kingdom level" events, there would be less pressure to drive such long distances. Frankly, I am all for it.
Believe me, as I live in central" Atlantia, this prospect does not benefit me personally, as no matter which region gets our area, we will go from being a relatively central location to being out on the fringes, driving to the center. But if it allows us as a whole to be more independent of oil, I promose will not complain.
