I usually field-strip my cigarettes, which (for those one or two
of you who don't know) consists of extinguishing the coal, scattering
the tiny shreds of tobacco, and crumpling the paper into a microscopic
wad then scattering it too. All biodegrades. If there's a filtertip
remaining, then it can be easily carried away and disposed of in the
next convenient trash can.
A cheap and period container for filtertiptips, or complete butts,
is a little leather pouch with a rawhide thong. They cost 50 cents or
maybe as much as a buck, at Smoke and Fire or many other places.
These come in very handy for other things, too -- and they're cheap.
An old Altoids tin, suitably refinished (burn the paint off, then
apply a different design) makes a fine portable ashtray, and I'd argue
is not blatantly OOP unless closely inspected.
