Like you said, see if anyone has an "in" with a school at any level (grade
school thru college) that can provide space.  Or check with local churches.
If there's a college or university in the area, check into what it would
take to form a student group that is affiliated with the SCA (great
mechanism for recruitment too) and what privileges.  Often times such a
student organization can host the event and include non-students.

Unevent and University are *the* easiest events to autocrat.  All you need
to do is find the site and then coordinate with the University staff or
Kingdom Seneschal for the details of the event.  It's a great way for
someone new to autocratting to get their feet wet.  Worked for me. ;-)
