APHIS's NAIS FAQ

These should answer many of the fears being expressed.
The odds that most of us in the SCA will be affected,
negatively or otherwise, by the NAIS are slim. The
rationale for implementing the NAIS is to allow for
traceback in the event of a disease outbreak. If
you've flipped out over the prospect of highly
pathogenic avian influenza crossing species, stopped
eating beef because of BSE fears, or remember the
absolute devastation of the FMD outbreak in the UK a
few years back -- or know someone who has -- then you
will probably understand why it's important to be able
to trace animals back to their premises of origin if a
serious livestock disease is discovered.

In short, it's not about the USDA trying to play Big
Brother or interrupt your fun. It's about trying to
keep American livestock safe so that we can continue
to have a safe food supply and enjoy our hobbies.

Disclaimer: I don't speak for the USDA or APHIS in
any official capacity.
