Ah, but the title was not used as an earl or count equivalent. Meridies
used it for someone who had reigned as prince during the period when
Meridies was principality and the Boar specifically decreed that it was an
illicit title in the early 1980's.

i was wondering why the title of Marquis is not
authorized as an alternate title. the reason i thought
it would be safe is that Federico Gonzaga was so
styled until he convinced the Holy Roman Emperor
Charles V to elevate him to Duke.

so, is there some reason that Marquis is not
considered to be equivelent to a Count or an Earl? The
title, at least, is period.
