Primus: I can't get to gmail from work. Period. Stop. End of story.
Secundus: I prefer to read email in its proper form, to wit, plain text.
To that end, I use mutt on a solaris machine. It's a modern email client
that has the good grace to not inflict HTML markup on me. If a message
has nothing but a text/html part (or that content type), it shows me
(correctly) a blank message, as such a message has no content. By that
mechanism, I am, so far as I have experienced in the many years I have
been on the internet, immune to malicious payloads sent via email
channels, including insidious things like web beacons that can track
my simply opening a message marked up with HTML.
I reject your claim that all other products are "inferior".
gmail may be an appropriate solution for some, and, in fact, I did
accept a gmail invite, but have not used the account due to its lack
of utility to me in my personal circumstances.
Trimming one's messages is orthogonal to one's choice of mail user
agent, save so far as that agent makes trimming difficult.
yours,
Herveus
