i think that the most eloquent answer to this question
has already been made.

how can you expect someone to do a Christian deed
if they do not know your need?

the fact that you were treated poorly does not change
the general principle. i have heard several ladies
tell me "yeah, your pavilion is great and all, but i
can't put it up myself and no one will help me." so
they stick to little nylon earth pimples and never
force the people around them to step up.

the basic problem is this. i don't know what you need.
if you do not tell me what you want me to do, i can't
be the gentleman you need me to be. i realize that
this is a terrible burden (it is, i am not being
snide) but if you don't carry it, i cannot even find
my burden.

i heard a story, probably apocryphal, but good
nonetheless. there once was a King who would wander
around during the early part of an event, dutifully
attended by his squires and retainers. whenever he
found a Lady setting up her camp, he would plunge
right in, setting up the tent and carrying stuff from
the car to the camp. or at least he would try to. his
squires and retainers, feeling it was wrong to stand
by while the King worked, would plunge in ahead of him
and get the work done, sometimes taking things right
out of His Majesty's hands. no one ever knew if it was
just the King's work ethic or if it was a secret plan
on his part to make his retainers work for the
Kingdom, but the results were the same. the camps got
set up and the Ladies were helped.

most of us feel that we should wait until asked before
imposing ourselves. i can lift a pavilion pole if you
can lift your voice to ask.
