I haven't been following threads here lately, but this one message caught my
eye.

So what you're saying is that if you don't help me, it's because I didn't
ask you to? Well, then that certainly explains a situation that happened at
Pennsic that still has me upset. I have multiple sclerosis and ride a
scooter (those at Pennsic may remember my scooter - it was dressed as a
horse). My lord-husband took me to show me the pond behind the bath-house.
He decided to stay in the shade by the pond while I went to finish up some
shopping. As I neared the top of the hill, my 'horse' decided to tip over on
top of me. As I picked myself up and was finishing up picking up my
belongings, my lord-husband finally made it up the hill to my aid. I looked
up after he asked if I was OK and noticed that less than 15 feet in front of
me, people had stopped to watch, but not one enquired as to whether or not I
was OK or offered to help. No one even asked if I needed it. Fortunately
there was no major damage to myself, but I did come home with some bruises
that were better than the ones my lord-husband came home with (and he's a
heavy fighter). As my lord and myself walked up to the paved area where the
others were standing watching, the others turned and walked off - still no
one even asking if I was OK or not.

So, according to you, the reason I didn't get any help is because I didn't
ask for it? If that's the attitude of today's SCA, then I want none of it.
If I notice someone needs help, I'll help them. I don't wait for them to
ask - even though it's not my 'duty', it's common curtesy.

And for those who subscribe to the premise that our only duty is to create
situations to allow men to be Gentlemen, all I have to do is commend you for
cooking your own food, making your own garb, keeping youself warm on a cold
night, taking care of your children, and doing all of those things that you
certainly appear to take for granted that we ladies do. I guess next time
we're packing for an event, all I need to do is tell my lord that I'm doing
my duty by creating a situation that allows him to be a Gentleman so have
fun doing, making, gathering, organizing, fixing, finding, repairing, and
cleaning everything by himself.
