And I, with my two cents, must make this point... tho' it be somewhat
different than the rest of the discussion I have seen posted. 

I say Vivat! to the lady in question.  Did you read the email?  
She fought this man off!  She whacked him with a pewter mug, and
deflected his knife.  He RAN AWAY...

While defending oneself may be "expected" behavior from men, for a woman
it requires overcoming the "lizard brain", and this is not exactly a
simple task.  That she "proved to be a fighter" speaks well of the sort
of woman who would be found in the SCA.  It seems too many women have
been taught to be polite, at all costs, EVEN to men who are about to
harm us.  I would never wish the emotional trauma of such an experience
on anyone, male or female, and I have nothing good to say about any
human being who attempts to physically overpower another human being,
(except, of course, upon the list field) but to this lady I have to say:
"YOU GO, GIRL."  

I hope that if you don't now, you someday soon don armor, and count
yourself among the members of the Iron Rose.  And as for those who would
physically harm others -- we can make 'em WISH they could hit like a
girl.

i would like to thank you for telling us about this.

flagellation about how the sca has declined from the
"good old days." 

bottom line, you are not safe simply because the
people you are with have dressed up in funny clothes
and try to act like knights. predators are everywhere,
and they walk and talk just like the rest of us. they
existed in period and they exist now. there were no
"good old days." your best defense is awareness. the
problem is that no defense works all the time.

please continue to tell your friends your story. an
aware and alert lady makes a poor target. while we all
aspire to be the rescuer, better that the attack not
happen in the first place.
