I have also seen items like this for sale at my local Wal-mart in the
quilters section.

Sewing needles should be fine.  Scissors, as noted, can go in checked bags
but not carryon bags.  I wouldn't count on getting my seamripper on board
(it has a point) but I've routinely flown with one of the Clover thread
cutters: http://www.save2much.com/buy/search/Clover_Thread_Cutter_Pendant
(also available at Joanne's where the quilting supplies are).  There's no
exposed sharp edge on them.
