Isobel,

As a flight attendant for United Airlines, I would be happy to answer your
question.

Items that are not permitted in carry-on luggage and are subject to being
confiscated include knives of any size and kind (including plastic ones),
cutting instruments of any kind (e.g., metal scissors, metal nail files).
These items may be transported in checked luggage.

df has a wonderful chart direct from the FAA that gives more details.

Enjoy your trip,

Subject: [MR] sewing notions on airplane?

Greetings,

I will be traveling via airplane for the first time since 9/11 (I don't fly
that often) and I was wondering, what are the restrictions for bringing
sewing supplies these days? I'd like to work on some hand sewing, but I'm
thinking I might get a hard time about bringing sewing needles, a seam
ripper, or the little sewing scissors with me. Has anyone else dealt with
this? I am flying with United Airlines if that makes a difference. Thanks
for your time.

I remain,
Isobel
